Mountain Restaurants
There are more than a dozen mountain restaurants in the area and of course the novelty value of being able to ski over to Italy to have lunch, where there are some wonderful places to eat on the slopes above la Thuile.
Closer to home, the ‘Le Plan du Repos’ restaurant (+33 (0) 4 79 06 87 92) has some good menu items, cafeteria style service and a large terrace on which to enjoy your meal on sunny days. Traversette ( +33 (0) 6 11 70 51 07), reached by the Fort chairlift, is open all days, with snacks, cafeteria, full restaurant and again a south facing terrace with great views for dining out when the sun is shining.
Restaurants in Town
The dozen or so restaurants in the resort offer good relaxed family dining, the majority offering one or more of the following: crepes, pizza or Savoyard specialities such as fondues and raclette.
La Grange (The Avernus; +33 (0) 4 79 23 18 38) provides all of these in a rustic setting (despite being only a few years old) while the wonderful Creperie le Petrin (+33 (0)4 79 40 17 95) just concentrates on crepes – to take away or eat there. Le Solaret (+33 (0)4 79 06 80 47) is another good multi-choice place that also does pizza to go. Le Turia (+33 (0)4 79 06 13 65) is the gourmet choice.
For a fully traditional experience several establishments make a real feature of the full Savoyard experience in surroundings and attitude as well as cuisine. L’Ancolie (+33 (0)4 79 06 86 71) and La Chaumiere (+33 (0)4 79 06 84 55) are in this category and both a shuttle bus ride away.
Grocery Shops
So far most of the traditional food shops are still in the older part of the resort. Chez Robert (+33 (0) 4 79 06 20 83; is a particularly wonderful find, stuffed full as it is with an incredible selection of regional food products – meat, jam, cheese, honey and there are also dozens of ready prepared meals to take away and cook in your apartment - tartiflette, Lasagne, Savoyard gratin crozets, Beaufort tart, the list goes on with daily specials too. A second food shop, Les Montagnes des Saveurs (‘the Flavours of the Mountains’; +33 (0) 4 79 06 80 28; lamontagnedessaveurs.com) provides a similar service.
For everything else there are three small supermarkets, two branches of Sherpa (+33 (0) 4 79 06 83 58; sherpa.net) and a Food 8 - 8 (+33 (0) 4 79 06 86 82). If you are self-driving and self-catering it may be worth stopping in, or before, Bourg St Maurice in the valley before driving up to the resort to stock up at one of the large supermarkets there.
